It’s official:  Duke Nuke ‘em For Never

Kinda figured this announcement was coming…about 7 or 8 years ago.  When you look in the dictionary under “vaporware”, this is what you see.  What’s sad is that 3D Realms kept drawing it out, seeding little sprinkles of hope now and then, but I ask you:  did anybody ever really believe it?  Really?  I figured it might come out sooner or later after all, and that after all this time it would probably be pretty bad, but this news doesn’t surprise me in the slightest.  It’s about time they let the project die, it’s just too bad they couldn’t do it in time to save the franchise any dignity.

That said, I highly recommend heading over to gog.com (Good Old Games) and picking up the original in all its glory for a mere pittance of $5.99 – don’t forget to scour the interwebs for the high-res pack and full mouselook support.  (Here is one example and the one I use, but there are others as well.)  The original 3D game brought a lot of new features to the budding first-person shooter genre at the time, and it’s a fun blast from the past to play again today.
